Why Does the 400Z / RZ34 Need an Upgraded LSD?
For drivers who truly want to enjoy the performance of the 400Z / RZ34, upgrading the LSD is an extremely important tuning item. Especially on Sport grade vehicles that are not equipped with an OEM LSD, driving force cannot be efficiently distributed to both rear tires during acceleration or corner exit, and one rear tire may spin. This prevents the vehicle from fully transferring its power to the road surface, leading to reduced traction and unstable vehicle behavior.
On the other hand, Performance, Heritage Edition, and NISMO models are equipped with an OEM Mechanical LSD, but the factory LSD has mild characteristics that prioritize daily drivability and quiet operation. For drivers who want sharper rear-end control during sports driving, circuit use, drifting, or winding roads, stronger locking performance and improved response are required.
The TOMEI TECHNICAL TRAX ADVANCE LSD increases rear grip during corner exit and firmly transfers driving force to both rear tires, greatly improving acceleration performance, straight-line stability, and rear contact feel. It brings out the true enjoyment of an FR sports car, including improved lap times on the circuit, better control during drifting, and greater confidence on winding roads.
To unlock the true potential of the 400Z / RZ34, an LSD is truly an essential drivetrain tuning item.
Features of the TOMEI TECHNICAL TRAX ADVANCE LSD
Strong locking performance with a high-capacity clutch disc structure
Designed to maximize rear traction performance for FR sports cars
Improved driving force transfer during corner exit
Effective for improving lap times during circuit driving
Improved rear control during drifting
Direct FR driving feel that can also be enjoyed on the street
TOMEI Technical Trax LSD does not have the mild operating feel of an OEM LSD. Instead, it has more aggressive characteristics suited for sports driving. Therefore, operating noise and tire dragging may occur during low-speed turns or in parking lots. However, this is proof of a true mechanical LSD, and it transforms the 400Z / RZ34 driving experience into something more direct and enjoyable.
Comparison between TOMEI Technical Trax LSD and the OEM LSD
Casing
The TOMEI LSD uses a fully machined case, while the OEM LSD uses a case structure made by machining a cast material. This fully machined construction allows the TOMEI LSD to secure more internal space for additional clutch discs while achieving both high case strength and weight reduction.
Disc
For both the external-teeth and internal-teeth types, the TOMEI LSD uses larger-diameter discs with a greater effective friction area compared to the OEM LSD. This increases the total friction surface area, allowing the LSD to generate stronger lock-up force.
external-teeth
Pressure Ring
The TOMEI LSD features a larger cam angle, making it easier for the pinion shaft to push the pressure rings apart. This produces a stronger lock-up effect. In contrast, the OEM LSD has a smaller cam angle, making it harder for the pressure rings to spread, resulting in weaker and less effective lock-up.
Internal parts
The TOMEI LSD uses 12 discs per side, for a total of 24 discs, while the OEM LSD uses 5 discs per side, for a total of 10 discs. By increasing the number of discs, the TOMEI LSD provides a greater friction surface area, delivering stronger lock-up force, improved disc wear resistance, and more stable LSD operation.
